L'Taken Social Justice Seminar in DC

This annual trip is designed to help teens gain a unique understanding of the political process and see how Jewish values are relevant in today’s world. Participants learn about issues that are relevant to us personally and collectively, as Jews and as Americans. The trip culminates with meetings in congressional and senatorial offices on Capitol Hill where we will personally lobby for the issues of our choice.

When is the trip?

• Our trip will place February 9-12, 2024. We typically depart on Friday in the early afternoon and return Monday evening.

What are the goals of the trip?

• Build community among our teens
• Learn about issues that are relevant to us personally and collectively, as Jews and as Americans
• Deepen teens understanding of the political process and commitment to social justice
• Strengthen the Jewish identity of our teens

 What will the teens be doing?

• Meeting with members of congress or their staff in their congressional offices
• Participating with over 300 teens from across America in programs covering a range of topics, including Israel, the environment, reproductive rights, LGBTQ civil rights, church/state separation, international relations and more
• Visiting the National Holocaust Memorial Museum and Smithsonian National Mall
• Celebrating Havdallah at the Jefferson Memorial
• Enjoying free time in Georgetown, on the National Mall and at Pentagon Row

 Who is eligible for this program?

• The trip is open to all high school students in 10^th through 12^th grade who are members of Temple Sinai.

 How much does the program cost?

• The program cost is $350, which includes travel, hotel, program registration and most meals.
• Most meals are included, with the exception of dinner on Saturday and Sunday, and lunch on Monday.

 Where do teens stay and how will they get there?

• All travel is by coach bus.
• Participants stay at the Hyatt Regency - Crystal City Hotel in Arlington, VA.

 Do participants need special attire?

• Yes, students should bring nice clothes for Kabbalat Shabbat, business attire for the visit to Capitol Hill, and casual clothes for the rest of the weekend. Business attire is required for Monday’s visit to the Hill.
• We will be outside for extended periods of time. Be sure to check weather.com to determine appropriate clothing.
• Participants will be walking about a mile (much of it uphill) during Monday’s visit to Capitol Hill, so their choice of footwear should be comfortable and low-heeled.
