4-6 Curriculum


Fourth Grade through Sixth Grade

Sundays 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.
Tuesday 3:45 to 5:45 p.m. or Wednesday 3:45 to 5:45 p.m.
On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, fourth- through sixth-grade students participate together in a musical service, as well as the discussion of Jewish ideas and ethical concepts.

Fourth Grade: Hebrew Language, Bible and Jewish Values

Goal: Students will be able to affirm their Jewish identity by exploring Biblical heroes and their contribution to Jewish life, and by studying the Hebrew language.
Overview: The fourth grade begins our midweek integrated program. Students embark on the decoding of Hebrew and engage in the study of the Bible. They explore the contribution of our forefathers to our lives today. The fourth-grade class participates in a Friday evening Shabbat service.
Topics: Hebrew reading and comprehension, Biblical heroes from Moses to King David, moral and ethical issues, holidays

Fifth Grade – Hebrew Language through Prayer, Ethics and Israel

Goal: Students will be able to affirm their Jewish identity by studying Hebrew prayer, ethics and Israel.
Overview: Fifth-grade students study Hebrew through prayer, Jewish ethics, and Israel in an integrated curriculum. They learn Hebrew through the study of prayer, with a special emphasis on Shabbat prayer. Jewish values and ethics are also part of the fifth-grade curriculum, allowing students to explore such concepts as derech eretz (appropriate behavior), tzedakah (righteousness, including charity) and rachmanut (compassion).

Sixth Grade – Hebrew Through Prayer Skills and What it Means to be an Adult as B’nai Mitzvah Approaches

Goal: Students will be able to affirm their Jewish identity through the study of Hebrew prayers, investigating our family genealogy, exploring our health, understanding mitzvot, and continuing to explore derech eretz (appropriate behavior), tzedakah (righteousness, including charity) and rachmanut (compassion).
Overview: Sixth graders continue our integrated midweek program, perfecting prayer reading and comprehension skills. Emphasis is placed on the Shabbat service. Students explore what it means to be a mensch as they approach becoming an adult in Jewish society.
Topics: Hebrew prayer skills, reading and comprehension, review of the Shabbat service in preparation for participating in a Shabbat Friday night service, family history, Hebrew names, health and ethics
